Our commitment in the country of origin

Decades ago, Dallmayr became the first German coffee roaster to import coffee beans from Ethiopia to Germany. To this day, this highland Arabica shapes the flavour of many Dallmayr coffees. This long history has created a special connection between Dallmayr and the country where coffee originated – a connection that has also inspired our local commitment.

How we have been supporting the Ethiopian aid organisation Menschen für Menschen since 2008:

The Menschen für Menschen Foundation has been active in rural regions of Ethiopia since 1981, following an integrated approach to development. Its work combines measures in agriculture and nutrition, water and hygiene, education, health, as well as social development and income generation. These initiatives are implemented together with local communities.

Milestones of our collaboration:

  • Established a coffee cooperative in Dano – helping to strengthen local coffee cultivation and create around 40 jobs for young adults
  • Built and equipped a school in Dano – benefiting more than 1,000 children and young people in the region
  • Enabled the cultivation of more than 55 million tree seedlings – supporting the foundation’s reforestation programmes
  • Supported the construction of 25 wells and fully funded four additional spring catchments – improving access to drinking water for a total of almost 8,000 people

Establishing a coffee cooperative in Dano – strengthening local coffee cultivation

The Dano project area lies in the Ethiopian highlands, around 200 kilometres southwest of Addis Ababa. Most people in the region make their living from crop farming and livestock. Coffee also has a long history here. Although it had been cultivated in the region in the past, its importance had declined over the decades. Together with Menschen für Menschen and the Bavarian State Government, Dallmayr therefore supported a project aimed at strengthening smallholder coffee cultivation in the region.

An important part of the project was providing new coffee seedlings and sharing knowledge about how to grow them. Around 2.2 million coffee seedlings were raised in the foundation’s nurseries as part of the project and distributed to farmers throughout the region. Training sessions provided farmers with knowledge on planting and caring for coffee plants, as well as handling coffee cherries during and after the harvest.

Local coffee processing was another important part of the project. Infrastructure was established for storing and further processing the coffee. A dry hulling machine is now also in operation, allowing the dried coffee cherries to undergo further processing locally. This is an important step for the cooperative, as it enables another stage of coffee processing to take place within the region. The project also created jobs for around 40 young adults.

A school for more than 1,000 children

In rural regions of Ethiopia, schools often have only basic facilities. In Dano, too, lessons were held for many years in temporary buildings that offered only limited conditions for everyday school life.

In September 2018, we therefore joined forces with the Menschen für Menschen Foundation to begin construction of the new Kekero Jibat Higher Primary School. Dallmayr funded both the construction and the equipment of the school – from furniture and teaching materials to books.

After two years of construction, the new school was completed in summer 2020. It comprises three classroom blocks, an administration building with a reading room and two sanitation facilities. Today, permanent classrooms with windows, school furniture and learning materials provide more than 1,000 children and young people between the ages of 7 and 16 with a place to learn.

Education is an important element in the fight against poverty and can open up new opportunities for young people’s personal and professional development.

"Menschen für Menschen"

More than 55 million tree seedlings have been planted

Fertile soil is an important foundation for agriculture and, therefore, for coffee cultivation. However, deforestation, overgrazing, population growth and climate change contribute to soil erosion and the loss of agricultural land in many regions of Ethiopia.

One focus of our long-standing partnership with Menschen für Menschen is reforestation. Through our donations, we have supported the cultivation of tree seedlings in the foundation’s nurseries as part of its reforestation programmes. According to Menschen für Menschen, more than 55 million tree seedlings have been raised to date with our support alone.

The foundation’s reforestation programmes go beyond raising tree seedlings. They also include measures such as training, the designation of protected areas, and the provision of fruit tree seedlings, fast-growing tree species and seeds. The aim is to stabilise soils and help preserve agricultural land for long-term use.

Clean drinking water for almost 8,000 people

In many rural regions of Ethiopia, access to clean drinking water cannot be taken for granted. Some families obtain their water from unprotected springs or water sources that are also used by livestock. As part of our partnership with Menschen für Menschen, we supported the construction of a total of 25 different types of wells in 2018 and 2019, including protected springs, hand-pump wells and shallow wells.

In 2024, we also enabled the construction of four additional protected springs in the Illu Gelan project area, a neighbouring region of Dano, and provided the full funding for them. In total, almost 8,000 people benefit from the wells and protected springs.

Protected water sources can not only improve access to clean drinking water but also shorten the distances people have to travel to collect water – a task that is primarily carried out by women and girls in many regions.
